a character born from the imagination of someone who loves tarot with all his heart. This project is his heart’s desire - and my story. Imagine I had been a young photographer and card reader in the year 1910, one year after the release of the Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot. When I held the deck in my hands for the first time, I felt something special. These images - they spoke to me. They sparked an idea: What if I captured the figures and archetypes of the tarot in real photographs? So I set out. With my plate camera and a portable studio, I traveled the world - by train, steamship, carriage, car, and on foot. Everywhere I went, I met people who were inspired by my vision. Artists, actresses, laborers, farmers, families, queens and kings - all of them helped with great devotion to bring these tarot cards to life. Together, we wanted to create something lasting. Images that not only reveal the essence of the tarot, but also express a hope: that even more than a hundred years later, people will find inspiration in them - to understand the past, make sense of the present, and rethink the future. A future without futile conflict (Five of Swords), without violence (Ten of Swords), inequality (Six of Pentacles), dependency (The Devil), or destruction (The Tower). Instead: love (The Lovers), community (Three of Cups), freedom (The Sun) - and justice for all.
